Beating the Summer Slump
It’s July. And I’m experiencing a summer slump. Maybe you are, too.
My youngest son and I just came back from three weeks visiting his grandparents and some aunts/uncles. I was on top of my website, but then I just let it go. I stopped posting here and on social media. Tired defined my life. My Bible study time slipped and I stopped exercising. Summer slump.
Best Ways to Get Back on Track
Recommit
Once I was home a few days I realized I needed to get over the slump. I got back to my paid job. I took a few days to think about what I wanted to post about and today I’m back at it.
Then I found a workout program I like on FitOn and committed to 10 days of ab exercises. it’s not much, but it’s a start in recommitting to being healthy for me.
What do you need to recommit to?
Bible Study
Sometimes we have to just do it. My commitment to Bible study didn’t waiver, I just got lazy in my summer slump.
I found a new study that I like and I got back to memorizing Scriptures. I started that before our trip and while I continued to recite them every day, I wasn’t learning new ones while we were gone.
Over the weekend I moved on to the next verse to memorize. Yesterday I started the new study I found. I just need to get up and do it first thing.
That’s what works best for me. Find what works best for you and stick with it.
Have fun
Sometimes when I’m in a slump I forget to have fun.
I need to go walk the beach and visit with friends. I need to play tennis when my oldest son gets home from his summer job at camp. My youngest would love to take me for ice cream in his new (used) car. I need to remember dates with my husband.
Find what’s fun for you and get to it!
Distinguish between summer slump and depression
Sometimes our summer slump is just that – a down time when we sort of let things go and lose sight of what we love.
Other times it’s genuine depression. Keep in mind, you can be a good mom while you’re depressed. I know – I’ve done it.
If it persists or you can’t snap out of it using the tips here, get help.
Practice Gratitude
I know. We all hear about this. But it really does help bring us out of a slump. Harvard Health says it can even make us happier. I’m all about that!
Need to thank someone in your life directly? Here are 20 creative ways to say thank you.
Don’t forget to thank your kids! They need to hear our gratitude.
Start a gratitude journal. Add praise and gratitude to your quiet time with God. Walk outside and thank God for everything you see. I have a bird feeder out back and I can see it from where I sit at our kitchen nook. I regularly thank God for bringing those birds to our feeder.
Whatever it is, give thanks.
Back to Summer Fun
Once I realized I was in a slump, I did these things and the slump is ending. I can see fun and comfortable routine in my life again. I hope these ideas help you, if you’re in a slump too!
With love,
🌸 Andrea
