Trusting God when Everything is Falling Apart

Storms

Last week I was preparing for Hurricane Milton to come. We were prepared for everything to fall apart. This was a huge storm for Florida. My husband was moving all loose items from outside the house. He was moving the garbage and recycling cans into the garage. My job was to secure the screened in back porch. I had to move all pool supplies, plants, and furniture back by the house, as close as possible.

As I moved plants, I got some of my orchids. These particular orchids were hanging on some chairs. I noticed one was blooming! And in such a rich, beautiful purple color. The one next to it was filled with buds about to burst open. I was amazed.

The flower was blooming despite the coming storm. The flower had no idea a storm was on its way. It had no idea the world could fall apart. The flower just knew it was time to bloom.

This flower made me think of our lives. So many times it feels like the world is falling apart. Our marriage is suffering, our kids are rebelling, our parents are aging, our finances never go far enough, our friends seem to have their own lives. Everything is falling apart.

But God is faithful. Just has He made these flowers to bloom despite the storm, He allows us to bloom in storms, as well. Some storms teach us lessons. Others just try our patience. But we can bloom and thrive, despite the storm.

Scriptures When Everything is Falling Apart

Here are some Scriptures to help you bloom when everything is falling apart:

Old Testament

  1. Isaiah 43:2 – “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”
    • This one is my go-to Scripture when everything seems to be falling apart. God promises He will be with us. We won’t drown, no matter how much it feels like we will. I always imagine God holding up my head when the waters start rising.
  2. Psalm 107:29 – “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.”
    • Jesus stilled the storms, as God says He will. I remember when my kids were little and there was a bad storm or hurricane we would sit on the back porch and yell at the storm to stop. While it didn’t work for us, we knew the One who could stop the storm. And we trusted Him while we did as He did and rebuked the storm.
  3. Nahum 1:7 – “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.”
    • The Lord is indeed my refuge. He is where I hide when my marriage seems impossible and when my kids break my heart. A refuge is a safe place to go in any storm, when things are falling apart. The refuge keeps us safe from harm. God is our refuge.
  4. Psalm 46:1-3 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”
    • The Lord is our ever-present help in trouble. Even when I don’t see a solution to my problem – finances, marriage, or friends – He knows the solution. In fact, He IS the solution. Trusting the Lord is the only way to make it through these tough times. We don’t have to fear no matter the storm raging around us because He cares for us. He will protect us as our refuge.

New Testament

  1. Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
    • This is one of the first Bible verses I ever memorized. God says not to be anxious for anything. Not a single thing. But in EVERY situation we are to trust God and His peace will overtake us. I am here to tell you that every single time I recite this Scripture and follow up with my concerns, God’s miraculous peace surrounds me and calms my mind. Give it a try!
  2. James 1:2-4 – “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
    • I’ll admit, this one is tough to swallow. But it’s truth. Jesus says we WILL have troubles in this world. This passage in James reminds us that those trials when everything is falling apart can serve us well. We are being grown into mature and complete believers.
  3. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 – “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
    • Here we are reminded that while we feel pressed, confused, persecuted, and struck down, we are not crushed, despairing, abandoned, or destroyed. God will protect us from those outcomes. Our feelings are liars. We need to trust these Truths from God’s Word. His Word never lies. God cannot lie so trust Him.

Worship When Everything is Falling Apart

I love to listen to worship music when it feels like my world is falling apart. Here are some of my favorites:

Praise you in the storm by Casting Crowns

Fear is a Liar by Zach Williams

Oceans by Hillsong

Raise a Hallelujah by Jonathan and Melissa Helser

Peace be still by Hope Darst

These verses and songs provide comfort to me and assurance when it feels like everything is falling apart and encourage trusting in God through life’s storms. I hope they bring you encouragement, too.

With love,

🌸 Andrea
