Following God’s Path For Us
Last Updated on April 3, 2026 by Andrea
God’s been working on my heart lately. Like everyone else, I’m busy. I have two primary jobs as professor at two universities. I also host this blog and write content and create products. I’m also a wife and mother. I have a house to take care of, like everyone else, along with pets. I bake and often share and sell my baked goods. My sister also pointed out the other day that I’m currently reading six books. You may notice that following God’s path was not on that list.
I’m also in counseling. My counselor and I were talking a week ago about the future and how I think the Holy Spirit envisions that. We created a beautiful image based on the Holy Spirit’s prompting. She then asked me how I felt about that vision. “Relief!” was my instant answer. She gave me homework to ponder what that relief looks like.
It was during those ponderings that God spoke to me.

When God Leads…
I was walking the dogs one day and praying about the sense of relief I feel when I imagine the future the Holy Spirit shared with me. I realized that in that future, I’m not crazy busy. I’m just doing what God called me to do.
So I began to pray about what that means for me. While I was praying over several days, I realized that God led me to a book in December that relates to His calling for me.
While I’m not normally a fan of devotionals, I felt God leading me to Live in Grace, Walk in Love by Bob Goff. If you’ve read some of my other articles, you know I enjoy Bob’s work. This devotional is different from others. He spends a lot of time talking about how to love others like Jesus did. While this topic is similar to the ones he talks about in his regular books, this devotional is a lot more hands’ on.
I realized that one of the major places God is leading me is to really loving others. Whether they agree with me or not. Whether they look like me or not. My heart is really being changed by these daily readings.

How Do We Know Where God is Leading?
So our heart is ready to follow, but how do we know if we’re hearing Him correctly? How do we really know where He is leading?
Following God’s path for us begins with a desire to follow. Next is listening. Prayer, worship, Scripture reading, and quiet time (truly quiet, with an ear toward listening for the Spirit to speak) all bring us closer to hearing.
Priscilla Shirer has an amazing Bible study on this very topic. Discerning the Voice of God walks us through every step to really listening for God to speak…and then following through with obedience.
Honestly, I can’t say what God is sharing with you. But I do know that if your heart is tuned toward Him, you’re praying and listening, and willing to obey, then trust Him with that.

What to do Next
While following God’s path for us does look different for everyone, it involves similar steps. Here are a few ways to get started on this amazing journey:
- Quiet your mind: Take some time to just sit in silence. Call it what you will – quiet time, meditation, whatever. But if the Spirit speaks with a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12), we need to be quiet enough to hear Him.
- Pray: Let God know you want to follow Him. Pray a sincere prayer of repentance for following your own way, then give your future to Him.
- Worship & Read Scriptures: Take time to familiarize yourself with worship (praising God) and to learning what He has to say. He will never lead you to somewhere that contradicts His Word. So knowing what His Word says is key to knowing if we are really hearing Him.
- Listen: Pay attention to that still, small voice throughout the day. It’s okay to quickly pray and ask God if that’s Him. My experience says we know in our Spirit when He answers.
- Obey: This is important. It’s one thing to hear God speak, it’s another to obey. He wants us to go where He calls, even when it may not make sense (but still, it will always line up with Scripture). So be ready! You never know what path He’ll call you to!
