SEASON 1: Episode 2

The Chosen Season 1: Episode 2 is about celebrating Shabbat.

Mary learns to host Shabbat dinner (sacred Sabbath dinner). 

Simon makes a deal with Romans to sell out Jewish merchants who are fishing on the sabbath. He does this to have his (and Andrew’s) debts forgiven. 

Matthew “tattles” on Simon – tells the Romans that they shouldn’t’ make deals with irresponsible Simon. 

Eden is upset with Simon because he’s clearly up to something. She doesn’t want to be babied and he’s working on Sabbath. She knows something is wrong. 

Barnaby and Shula are friends – they continue to play a role in future episodes.

We also meet disciples James and Thaddeus in this episode.

The chosen FACTS & BACKGROUND:

The Chosen is filled with cultural references and this episode is no exception. This one focuses on Shabbat, the Sabbath service in homes.

Shabbat service is on the Sabbath day. It’s a special dinner with special food and prayers. 

The av beit din is the chief judge of three in small towns at the time. They were historically part of the Sanhedrin (Jewish court system). The judges might deal with both religious and civil matters. In this episode they were interested in Lillith/Mary’s miraculous healing. 

The blessings said at the Shabbat dinners are traditional to Jewish culture.

VERSES:

The Chosen references several Scriptures in this episode:

“A woman of valor, who can find?” Comes from Proverbs 31:1 Can often be the start of Shabbat services at home. 

Barnaby says, “Apparently something good CAN come from Nazareth!” This is a similar statement we will hear later from Nathaniel. The verse comes from John 1:46

This book is fantastic for understanding Shabbat. It is a simplified version of some complicated ideas, but that’s what I need with this topic, sometimes! Enjoy.
