I recently listened to The Good Dream by Donna VanLiere (you might know her from her Christmas Hope series).

A book review by Dr. Andrea Towers Scott

SUMMARY: The Good Dream is about a single woman whose mother died and she’s now running their home by herself. She has a big garden, a loyal dog, and supports her community. Food begins disappearing from her garden. Eventually she finds out a little boy has been coming in the dark of night to eat the ripe veggies. They bond and she tries to learn about him, but he has a physical disability that prevents him from talking.

Though the town is against her, Ivorie prevails in offering help to the little boy. She has tough choices to make about love, life, and family. In the meantime, redemption is a theme that runs throughout the story.

REVIEW: I’ll start with where I struggled. The boy lives in the woods with a man who is very mean to him. I’ll be honest, I had to skip some parts where the man was hurting the little boy. I just can’t handle that sort of thing. Skipping them didn’t affect my understanding of the story line at all. Do I wish she didn’t include them to that level of detail? Yes. But that’s my only criticism.

The Good Dream is well written with a plot line that makes you feel for both Ivorie and the young boy. The story comes together well with Ivorie making important decisions we can all learn from. Donna VanLiere weaves her stories with such heart that it’s difficult not to love the characters. And it made me want to keep working on my garden, so that was a happy outcome for me!

I give The Good Dream 4/5 stars overall.
