Book summary

In Aftermath by Terri Blackstock, a young woman is plagued by an explosion that happened during a concert she attended. She escaped with her life, but her friends were not so lucky. The media immediately identifies the person they believe a local man, Dustin, is responsible. While the evidence seems cut and dried, life is never that simple.

Attorney Jamie Powell comes to Dustin’s rescue to prove his innocence. In an unexpected turn of events, the truth wins out.

Throw in a love story and this is a gripping adventure with a hint of love.

What I loved about Aftermath

Well, Terri Blackstock is one of my favorite fiction authors so there’s that. Truly, Aftermath moved right along.

I loved the main character and wanted him to be innocent.

We think the girl from the concert – Taylor – is going to be the main character, but she moves to a supporting character pretty quickly. She has a great relationship with her sister that comes through and I appreciate that.

One of the characters has a very tough choice to make and Terri frames it well. She does an amazing job of clearly communicating the challenge of how far we go to help someone we love.

And the love story. I’m always a sucker for a wholesome love story.

The thread of God’s goodness is clear throughout the book without being preachy. As always the book is well written and holds together well.

What I didn’t love

There’s not much. I could see some people disturbed by the explosion chapter. The Aftermath being discussed is from the concert explosion, so it plays center stage. While it didn’t bother me, I could see it bothering some people.

Taylor (the girl from the concert) has a few mental health issues. As someone who struggles with mental health, I didn’t always love how it was portrayed. Though in all honesty, I don’t have the same issues that Taylor did – maybe that was an accurate representation of that type of situation.

Would I reccomend it?

Definitely. Aftermath is a great read and worth your time.
