It’s now Season 1: Episode 4 of the Chosen. We’re back to Simon and the fisherman in this episode. While this episode is packed with drama, the Scripture message is pretty straightforward.

If you recall, Simon had agreed to turn in merchant (Jewish) fisherman to the Romans in exchange for relief from his taxes.

Quintus hires Matthew (the tax collector) to keep an eye on Simon to be sure he’s going to keep up his end of the bargain.

The religious leaders are upset about John the Baptist.

Andrew runs up, tired and out of breath, proclaiming to Simon that he saw Someone.

Andrew catches Matthew spying on him and Simon. He’s a bit concerned but says nothing.

Simon fishes all night; Matthew keeps watch; Toward morning Andrew, Zebedee, James and John all come to help him in a last-ditch effort to catch the fish he needs.

A Man appears on shore; he’s been talking with a small crowd of people. Andrew knows Who it is. The Man asks Simon some questions, then suggests he put in again, on the other side of the boat. Simon thinks he’s nuts, but does it anyway. Andrew just grins – he knows Who is asking Simon to try again.

Matthew and the crowd stand astounded by the miracle of the fish.

The Chosen FACTS & BACKGROUND:

The Chosen clearly demonstrates that Romans and tax collectors were equally hated by the Jews. See here for more info about that relationship.

The Chosen VERSES:

We learn about John the Baptizer wearing camel hair and  preaching a baptism of repentance in Matthew 3

Andrew says saw “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (taken from John 1:29)

Jesus tells Simon to put down for a catch a bit farther out. Simon is tired and refuses at first, but Jesus looks at him. He agrees. “At your word” -The catch is overwhelming!  This comes from Luke 5

Jesus parables – Fishermen: the good fish are  kept & bad thrown away; angels will separate evil from righteous and throw them into a fiery furnace (Matthew 13); every scribe who has been trained for the Kingdome of Heaven (like them, and us) is like the master of a house who brings home treasure, both new and old. We are to do the same with this knowledge.

Jesus tells the people that  some parables will make sense to some and not to others (Matthew 13);

Simon sorrowfully kneels on the beach with his head down; confirms Jesus is the  Lamb of God. Jesus agrees. Simon says, “Depart from me; I am a sinful man; you don’t know who I am  – the things I’ve done;” “Jesus do not be afraid Simon.” “I’m sorry. We’ve waited for so long. Believed but I’m so sorry.” Jesus sas, “Lift up your head, Fisherman… Follow me.” “I will,” Simon responds. Andrew agrees, too. Jesus invites James and John too;  Zebedee says GO. (Luke 5)
