How to Keep Christ at the Center of your Summer Vacation
Right now the kids have about 3 weeks until school lets out. I don’t know about yours, but mine is READY. My college son just arrived home today and he’s exhausted. It was a rough, but good, semester. Most kids and teachers are bouncing off the walls in anticipation of school ending. I’ve always loved summer because it means dedicated time with my kids.
Yet regular faith-based activities may take a break over summer, especially during vacations. They don’t have to, though! Here are five ideas to keep Christ in your summer vacation.
Try a new church
Summer vacation is often a time that we let church activities slide. And that’s okay for some families. But one way to keep Christ in summer vacation is to plan on attending church while you’re away. Think of it as an adventure! Sure, going to a new church can be challenging, but you may never go there again, so don’t worry what people think about you. Not sure how to find a new church? Check this site out for local church listings.
My family always goes to visit “the grandmas” over the summer break. We found a church we really like and it’s become our summer vacation church. People have come to expect us every June. I love that we get to worship at a different style church for a few weeks every year.
Volunteer
This one can be challenging if you don’t know where to volunteer. Not sure what to do? This article can help you narrow down your volunteer opportunities. Once you decide what you like to do, check out local organizations or churches to see if they engage in those opportunities.
On the other hand, there are lots of apps and websites that will find volunteer opportunities for you. Helping others is a great way to keep Christ in summer vacation.
Help a neighbor
If your summer vacation includes staying in a neighborhood, why not help a neighbor? Make extra dinner or cake and take it to an elderly person. Offer to pick weeds or sweep someone’s sidewalk. Take someone’s dog for a walk when you go. Heading to the store? Ask a neighbor if they need anything. Here’s a list with more ideas for helping your neighbor.
Start a new study
Summer vacation is a great time to start a new study or devotional. Try a new author or choose a topic based on the season you/your kids are in. Studies don’t have to take a lot of time and you don’t have to keep an entire notebook with answers to questions. Take turns reading the study and just talk about the questions that engage you. Make Bible reading fun
Read different books in the Bible. If you normally read New Testament, try the Old Testament. Make it fun, though! Have kids act out stories (Genesis is great for this). When my kids were younger they each had days when they would plan “home church.” They would pick some worship songs to play and choose a Bible reading. They would read the selection, then say what it means for them. This was a great way to get them involved with Scripture.
What will you do to keep Christ in summer?
This is just the tip of the iceberg about how to keep Christ in summer vacation. When we try a new church, volunteer, help a neighbor, try a new study or make Bible reading fun, we are making new traditions and routines to keep our faith fresh.
We keep Christ in summer when we remember to put others before ourselves, even family members. So don’t just plan what you want to do, take their thoughts into consideration. Have a talk with the people going on vacation and ask what they want to do to keep their faith alive on break.
Let me know what you do to keep Christ in summer vacation for your family. Tell us in the comments!
