SUMMARY:

The Leper

A man enters a pawn shop to sell some wares. When the shopkeeper discovers the man has leprosy, he freaks out (according to custom at the time). The downtrodden man leaves and heads to the countryside, seeking Jesus. The man’s sister was a server at the wedding in Canaan and saw the miracle. The man implores Jesus to have compassion and heal him – fully confident that He can do so. Jesus does heal him and treats him with respect, then sends him on his way.

Jesus and the disciples show compassion

The disciples clean up camp. Simon is sent home to tend to family matters while Jesus escorts his mother home.  Later, Jesus and his disciples (minus Simon) are walking through the countryside and encounter an Egyptian woman (Tamar) who will later play a big role in the story. Tamar observes Jesus heal the leper.

Meanwhile James and John’s parents are busy at home when they notice Jesus arriving with the disciples. They excitedly welcome the group into their home. “James, John, listen to him, please. And stay by HIs side” says Salome (their mom).

Jesus is talking with the family and disciples when neighbors begin to visit. A crowd soon gathers. In spite of cultural norms, women feel comfortable asking questions and talking with Jesus directly – a big deal at that time. He clearly feels compassion for everyone, including women

Straightaway, Jesus begins telling parables. See below for specific Scriptures.

Later Tamar shows up with friends and a paralyzed man and insists Jesus must see him to heal him. With Mary’s help, they then begin to tear up the roof and lower him down for healing. Indeed, Jesus is impressed with Tamar’s faith, has compassion on the man, and heals the friend for her faith.

Matthew & Gaius

Matthew is seemingly following Simon and Andrew. They get upset that Matthew is still there but Matthew is clearly confused. Rome doesn’t believe him and Jews don’t want him around, but he clearly wants to learn more about Jesus. He believes he saw a miracle. “I need to know, am I deceived?” Matthew asks Simon and Andrew.

Gaius and Matthew oversee Simon and Andrew’s tax offering from the miracle of the fish. They then appear before the local Roman authority who clearly doesn’t understand what happened with the miracle. He asks Matthew for his opinion about how to impress a childhood rival who comes to visit. Gaius is promoted to Primi.

Subsequently Gaius hears of the crowd in town and goes to investigate. Andrew assures him there is no trouble – it’s peaceful. Surprisingly, Matthew went with him and the Jews shove him around and treat him meanly. Meanwhile some kids (from a few episodes ago) show compassion on Matthew and invite him to sit on a roof with them to see Jesus and hear the teaching.

Nicodemus

Nicodemus tells the Sanhedrin that John the Baptist is no threat to them. He learns that his former student, Schmuel, is the one who imprisoned John the Baptist. Later Nicodemus plans a time to have a special talk with Schmuel to help him understand that John may not be who Schmuel thinks he is. Reads from Isaiah (see below).  Nicodemus compares the reading to John the Baptist. Schmuel quotes John and they argue about both John the Baptist and Who is coming after. Still Schmuel insists that God couldn’t come to earth as a person. Nicodemus tries to get Schmuel to see he is placing limits on God; that indeed God can do whatever He wants. (See Scripture section below for specific verses.)

They are interrupted when they are told that a crowd has gathered to listen to someone who is preaching in the town. Nicodemus is clearly intrigued while Schmuel is clearly threatened. Schmuel fights his way to the front and asks by whose authority Jesus is teaching. Jesus forgives the sins of the paralyzed man. He then reads Schumel’s mind and tells the man to pick up his mat and walk – to show He, the Son of Man, has authority on earth to forgive sins.  The man is healed and Schmuel is both shocked and angry. He calls for Roman guards and claims Jesus is a threat to the public peace. Nicodemus is amazed.

Later Nicodemus finds Mary and is trying to make sense of what he saw. He asks her about Jesus. Unquestionably, Nicodemus wants to know more. He asks for an audience with Jesus. Mary has compassion on Nicodemus and says she will do what she can.
