God Saw You Getting Tired: A Prayer for Strength

Last Updated on August 26, 2025 by Andrea

I’m tired. Normally in this time of year I’m energized – the seasons are changing, my work shifts to a new term, the busyness of summer is behind us, and I’m ready for the joy that fall brings. Can you relate? If so, hear this – God saw you getting tired. And He knows your future. He knows His plans for us (Jeremiah 29:11) and wants us to trust in Him.

Introduction

We all know that life can be overwhelming, exhausting, and discouraging, even for faithful believers in Christ. And feeling tired – emotionally, physically, or spiritually – is not a sign of weakness, but of being human. God sees the late nights, the tears you’ve wiped away, and the weight you’ve been carrying for far too long. The beautiful truth is this: God doesn’t just see your weariness—He cares. His Word promises rest, renewal, and strength for the weary soul. In this post, let’s look at what Scripture says about God’s strength in our weakness, and close with a prayer to refresh your spirit today.

God Sees Our Weariness

  • Scripture Reference: Matthew 11:28-29 — “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Oh, how my soul longs for this verse. I tell myself this multiple times a day when life is just too tiring to continue in my own strength. The fact that God wants us to bring our concerns to Him is almost too good to believe.

Yet He does. We are told in this Scripture to bring our burdens and weariness to Him and He will give us rest. When we are honest with Him, we can begin to receive His rest. Not sure about being honest with God? First, God knows everything – even your thoughts and feelings. It won’t come as a surprise to Him. Remember, God saw you getting tired.

Second, read the Psalms – David was brutally honest with God about what he was going through. And every time he poured out his burden to God, he ended up praising God. When we pour out our burden and weariness, God fills that space with peace and rest, freeing us up to return praise to God.

Strength Comes from God, Not Ourselves

  • Scripture Reference: Isaiah 40:29-31 — “He gives strength to the weary…”

While that verse is the key verse for this point, I want to share the context as I find the entire thing so comforting (Isaiah 40:28-31 NIV):

The Lord is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary,

and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary,

and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the Lord

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Our human strength has limits, but not God’s. He doesn’t get tired or overwhelmed. Rather, he gives strength to those of us who do. His strength is endless! We can do amazing feats when we trust in God instead of ourselves.

Elijah Drew Strength from God

God saw you getting tired. Just like he saw Elijah under the broom tree in 1 Kings 19. After a great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah fled for his life, exhausted and afraid. He sat down beneath a solitary broom bush and, overwhelmed by despair, prayed that he might die. In his weakness, Elijah admitted he could go no further on his own strength. But God saw him there – tired, depleted, and on the verge of giving up. Rather than rebuke him, God sent an angel to provide bread and water, and gentle rest. Twice Elijah was encouraged, not by his own power, but by God’s sustaining touch. Strengthened by what God gave, Elijah was able to journey forty days and nights through the wilderness, far beyond what his weary body could have endured alone. In his lowest moment, Elijah discovered that God’s strength truly begins where ours ends.

And We Can, Too

Just like Elijah who was exhausted from the fight, we also become exhausted from our fights. Not against an army (for most of us, anyway), but against the enemy of this world (Ephesians 6:12). Scripture tells us that the enemy roams around like a lion, looking for whom he can destroy (1 Peter 5:8). But that doesn’t have to be us. When we turn to God with our burdens and battles, He can sustain us with His strength, just like He did for Elijah.

The Shepherd Who Restores Our Souls (Psalm 23)

  • Scripture Reference: Psalm 23:1-3 — “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.”

This passage is probably one of the most well-known in Scripture. When I’m at my lowest and no other Bible verses come to mind, this one always does. Psalm 23 simply feels like it’s a part of me. This Psalm paints a picture of God – tenderly caring for His people, providing rest, and giving an opportunity for renewal.

When you’re done in by this world, imagine yourself in that green pasture, beside a quiet stream. The birds are chirping. The weather is perfect. A cool breeze washes over you.

Close your eyes and imagine it. Use all five of your sense. Can you smell the sweet grass? Hear the birds? Feel the breeze? Taste the clean air? See the babbling stream? Do you feel your heart slow down as you let God give you peace? Me too. This place is one of my very favorites to visit when life is overwhelming and I want to hide. I just go to this place that David created for us and meet God there to let Him care for me and provide rest and renewal. Likewise, God saw you getting tired and He provided a place you can go for rest in this Psalm.

Psalm 23

Not familiar with the whole Psalm (Psalm 23 KJV)? I’m including it in the King James Version because that’s the one many of us memorized as kids. But here’s a more modern translation, if you prefer. Here’s the classic one:

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

The Promise of Renewal

God’s power shines brightest in our weakness. For me that means He shines pretty bright because I generally feel pretty weak in this world. When I read Scriptures like this one in 2 Corinthians, I realize that my tiredness is an invitation from God to rely on Him more. It’s an invitation to get up a bit earlier to meet with Him and commit my day to Him before I do anything else. My tiredness is an invitation to pray throughout my entire day, trusting in Him to take care of the rough places. He’ll do the same for you.

A Prayer for Strength

Let’s pray for our weak and tired moments.

Heavenly Father, I come to you burdened and tired. Sometimes this life I have is more than I can bear. I confess that far too often I try to handle things all on my own. But your Word is clear that you don’t want us to do that. You want your children to come to you. So here I am, Lord. Tired, defeated, overwhelmed, and ready to let You take over. Please fill me with the rest Jesus promised in Matthew, the strength you provided for Elijah, and the renewal you gave to David. Grant me peace that passes all understanding as I release all my concerns to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Encouragement for the Journey

  • Scripture Reference: Psalm 46:1 — “God is our refuge and strength…”

Remember that you are not alone—God walks with them in their exhaustion. God saw you getting tired and provided His Word to show you that He is your refuge and your strength. When we read the Bible, we find friends who also felt what we are feeling. Take comfort in their stories and learn from them. When you do, God’s peace of rest and renewal will fill you.

Practical Steps When Weariness Sets In

Even in the midst of exhaustion, there are gentle and effective ways to open your heart to God’s renewing presence. Here are a few practical steps you can take when you feel tired or overwhelmed:

  • Pause for Prayer: When you feel your energy fading, take a moment to stop and pray. Allow yourself to be honest with God about your feelings and invite Him to refresh your spirit.
  • Meditate on a Favorite Verse: Choose a passage that speaks to your heart—perhaps Psalm 23, with its promise of guidance and comfort—and let its words settle into your mind and soul. Reflect on its meaning throughout your day, drawing strength from its assurance.
  • Journal Your Journey: Writing down your thoughts, prayers, and the ways you experience God’s presence can help you process emotions and recognize His faithfulness over time. Certainly, journaling creates space for gratitude and hope to grow, even on weary days.

Remember, these simple practices are invitations to connect with God’s unending strength and love. Whenever you feel drained, let them guide you back to His peace, reminding you that rest and renewal are always within reach.

Conclusion

If you are feeling worn down, take heart—God sees you. He knows your struggles and meets you right where you are, offering rest and renewal through His presence. Tiredness is not failure; it is an invitation to lean more fully on the One whose strength never runs out. Whenever you feel your energy fading, turn to His Word, whisper a prayer, and trust that His grace is enough for today. May this prayer and the Scriptures we’ve reflected on remind you: you are never alone, and with God, you can find the strength you need to keep going. Above all, remember that you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength (Philippians 4:13).

With prayers for peace,

🌸 Andrea
