When a New Year Doesn’t Feel New

A few years ago, we had several losses all in one year. We lost a pregnancy, a dog, and my husband lost his father and his grandmother. It was a very rough year. And while I was hopeful for the coming year, I was not terribly optimistic. It felt like the hits just kept coming with no fresh start in sight.

If you’ve had a rough year, I understand. Medical challenges, death, children pulling away, endings, work challenges, and more make this life very difficult at times. And January, with all its’ hype for new beginnings, can often highlight what didn’t change.

Perhaps God did not answer your prayers last year, or didn’t answer them the way you hoped. A calendar reset doesn’t heal a wounded heart. But God does. He offers a fresh start that is deeper than any resolution. With God, we can truly find a new fresh start this new year.

What the Bible Really Means by “A Fresh Start”

While it’s human nature to want to forget the bad stuff, that’s not necessarily what God means by a fresh start. His fresh starts are rooted in mercy and grace.

While these godly fresh starts are beautiful and life-giving, they are often gradual and not instant. I understand that it can be difficult to keep our eyes on God when the fresh start we long for is slow to happen.

But the best news is that God meets us in our pain, not just after it’s resolved. He’s with you and me right now.

Verses to Focus on God

These two verse selections of foundational truths always help me focus on God’s goodness to help me:

Lamentations 3:22-23 reassures us that, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” We get a fresh start every day, even if our circumstances don’t change. My grief over losing my baby was still raw, but God’s fresh love surrounded me each day and helped me climb out of the pain.

Isaiah 43:18-19 tells us, ““Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” God tells me not to dwell on the bad things. He is doing something new; I just have to look for it.

I read two books last year about our thought life that helped me tremendously. The first was Tame Your Thoughts by Max Lucado (one of my very favorite authors). Written in his classic, easy style, this book gives a solid framework for retraining our brain.

Then I read Don’t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table by Louie Giglio. This was the first book I read by him, and I’ll definitely be reading more. This book explained all that God has planned for us and the schemes the enemy will engage in to disrupt those plans. This book was very vivid for me and has become a favorite that I’ll probably read every year.

Bible Verses for a Fresh Start with God

These seven verses are ones that help me refocus during difficult seasons. These verses from God’s Word give me something to focus on besides the trouble invading my life.

Verse 1:

Lamentations 3:22–23Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Verse Focus: God’s mercy meets us daily—even after hard seasons. A new season is coming! Even if we don’t respond the way we wanted to, even if we fell apart, God’s mercies are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness. Join me in claiming this truth every day!

Verse 2:

Psalm 40:1–3 I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock

and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.

Verse Focus: This verse reminds us that sometimes we need to wait for the Lord. But it also tells us that he WILL hear our prayer and lift us out of our circumstances. He will rescue us. Then He will put a new song of praise in our mouth. I love praise songs because they remind me to worship God.

Verse 3:

Isaiah 1:18“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.”

Focus: I know that sins are not a fun or popular topic. But if we weren’t sinners we wouldn’t need a Savior. This verse focuses on God’s forgiveness and power to cleanse us from our sins. It focuses on healing, not shame. So, if you, like me, have gone astray and done things you wish you hadn’t, accept the forgiveness Jesus Christ offers today and everyday.

In fact, let’s pray now. Dear God, Thank you for the gift of forgiveness and healing. I confess that I am a sinner. I’ve made choices that draw me away from you. I go the wrong way and say things that hurt you and others. I come to you now, ready to receive a Savior. My heart accepts Your Son, Jesus, as payment for my sins. I accept forgiveness for all I’ve done and receive your healing in my life. Help me to walk with you every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Verse 4:

2 Corinthians 5:17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Verse Focus: If you’ve accepted Christ as your Savior, you are a new person. You have a new identity in Christ. While your old sinful nature is part of your past, it doesn’t’ have to guide your figure. God does not erase our memories of those times but we can use them to keep moving in His direction instead of the direction of those old sinful ways.

Verse 5:

Joel 2:25I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten— the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm — my great army that I sent among you.

Verse Focus: Ah, this verse settles my spirit. God is the ultimate Redeemer. He will restore what’s been lost. Those years that I was living in sin, while not gone, will be reclaimed. I’ve seen this happen time and time again in my own life. God will restore lost time.

Verse 6:

Philippians 3:13–14Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Verse Focus: I hope you see the pattern with these verses. Our past does not define us. Here Paul tells us that we can move forward without denying the past. Yes, it happened. But look what we are striving for – a life with Christ! God has a special calling for your life. Use these verses to remind yourself to keep your eyes on His call on your life as you make a fresh start.

Verse 7:

Revelation 21:5He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

Verse Focus: This verse fills me with anticipation. God IS making all things new—not just circumstances but all things. Scripture authors are not generic with their words. When John wrote that God is making all things new, he means all things. Not some things. Not for some people. But ALL things. I hope that brings you encouragement after a rough year.

If You’re Starting Over with a Heavy Heart

I started seeing a counselor in 2025 and she’s amazing. One of the things she’s working with me on is grieving my losses. I tend to deny my feelings, including grief. But it’s important to work through our grief.

No one else has to understand what YOUR grief looks like. We can grieve all kinds of things. For many people, the new year is a time of grief. We may be grieving the loss of another year, the prospect of another year without a loved one, the loss of our health. If you feel a loss, grieve it. You can still hope for a fresh start in the process.

God is not disappointed in you. Let me say that again. God is not disappointed in you! Healing takes time and He knows that. Jesus walked this earth and felt the pain we feel. He totally understands.

It’s entirely possible for faith and sadness to coexist. One does not negate the other. When I’m experiencing loss, grief, and sadness I also have faith that God will keep His promises – He will redeem the past, He will be faithful in His incredible plan for me, and He will forgive my past.

Faith and sadness both have a place in our walk with God and in our fresh start.

A Simple Prayer for a Fresh Start with God

Dear God, Thank you for the gift of a Savior and the gift of a fresh start. The last year was hard but I know you have good plans for me. Please heal my heart and give me hope for a better year – for a fresh start with you. Fill me with Your grace and mercy to see beauty in each day. Please keep Your promises and help me to live the life You have planned for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Beginning Again—One Day at a Time

I assure you that a fresh start doesn’t require energy you don’t have. It just requires letting go and trusting God’s grace and mercy. Let Christ Jesus heal you in His time.

God is an everlasting God and will walk with you into the new year and His plans for you. He does not run ahead, demanding that we catch up. Rather, He goes at our pace, ready with new opportunities for us. He truly has your best interests in mind.

Today is enough. Reading this article may have been the baby step you needed. Perhaps tomorrow you will read Scripture about faith and be encouraged. Perhaps you want to renew your relationship with God after falling away a bit. God welcomes you back with open arms. Those are all good practical steps to claiming your fresh start.
