Reality

Strengthening our faith is not always easy in this busy world. I remember when my kids were a bit younger – before they had driver’s licenses and could take themselves places. My days were so busy! I had to get them ready for school, get them to school, take care of my own exercise and work, pick them up, get them after-school food, take them to after-school activities, get them dinner, pick up the house, and fall into bed exhausted before doing it all the next day. I’m sure you can relate!

I found it most challenging during those seasons to fit in Bible reading and study. Those busy times creep up on us, not just when our kids are little! Work and home alone will sap the energy and time from our days.

There are lots of reasons we should strengthen our faith. Not the least of which is that it draws us closer to God. It also helps us to resist temptation. A stronger faith helps us to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. It also takes our mind off of the pressures of this life and puts it where it should be – on God. I’ve discovered five easy ways to strengthen my faith during busy seasons.

1. Morning Prayer and Devotion

Start each day with a few moments of prayer or reading a Scripture verse to set a faith-centered tone for the day ahead.

Reading Scripture is crucial for developing our faith. When we read the Bible, we learn what God did to save us from ourselves and our sin. We also read what God wants from us – we learn His will and His plan. Not sure where to start reading? My favorite books are Ruth, Esther, Luke, and Philippians. Genesis also has many stories you’ll recognize like Noah and Joseph (the dreamer). Would you prefer a more story-like Bible presentation? Try the Chronological Bible or the Story Bible.

Devotions are another great way to connect with God in the morning and strengthen your faith. They often have some sort of lesson or application for you to ponder throughout your day. My sister swears by Jesus Calling. Some of my favorites include this family devotional and this marriage devotional.

Finally, sometimes we like to really dig in and study. I’ll be honest, that’s my favorite way to strengthen my faith and connect with God in the morning. If you can study with your spouse, here’s a great marriage study. Not sure what your other options are? Here’s a list of Bible studies to get you started.

2. Incorporate Faith into Routine Activities to Strengthen Your Faith

Use daily tasks like commuting or exercising as opportunities to listen to faith-based podcasts, worship music, or meditate on Scripture.

I always pray with my children before they get out of the car at school or before they leave home in the morning. The prayer isn’t long and winding – rather it’s focused on them, their success, and their protection.

When my kids were younger, we had a regular Bible study time. They have continued the practice on their own, now that they are older. Here’s a great Bible study for younger kids. My kids and I also talk about what I’ve been reading in Scripture. I will tell them what I’ve learned, and we talk about it.

Throughout my day I enjoy listening to Christian audio books and podcasts, with sermons thrown in for good measure. When I keep my thoughts focused on these topics I find I worry a great deal less.

We also pray before meals and before bed every day. Scripture tells us to keep the Word before us throughout our day (Deuteronomy 6:6-8). Making God’s Word a regular part of your routine activities will go a long way to strengthening your faith.

3. Practice Gratitude Throughout the Day

Take moments to thank God for small blessings, fostering a spirit of gratitude and reminding yourself of His presence even in the busy moments.

Seriously, God wants us to be thankful in all situations, good or bad. We don’t have to thank God for our bad day, but rather that He is with us in the bad day. He alone can turn our day around.

Remembering to be grateful throughout the day is a wonderful way to strengthen your faith. I do this through prayer all day long, but one way to make it intentional is to start a gratitude journal. Kids often love to get involved, so here’s a gratitude journal for kids.

Beyond strengthening our faith, gratitude has health benefits including: reduced depression and anxiety, improved heart health, stress relief, and improved sleep! I know I can use every one of those benefits, so engaging in gratitude is something easy to start today.

4. End the Day with Reflection

Spend a few quiet minutes at night reflecting on the day, offering thanks, and seeking guidance for tomorrow. This helps strengthen trust in God’s plan.

It’s so easy to just go-go-go all day and then fall into bed. But when we end our day with reflection, we strengthen our faith as we reflect on how God helped us throughout our day. This is another great practice to do with your spouse and/or kids. Reflection is another way to fight stress and connect with how we really feel.

When we reflect on our day we end with gratitude, too. We can thank God for how He protected us and guided us throughout the day. Not sure what this end-of-day reflection looks like? Here are some questions to ask (yourself or your family members) at the end of the day.

5. Connect with Faith-Based Community

Engage in regular fellowship with others, whether through church groups, online forums, or a prayer partner, to stay accountable and inspired.

This is the last, but not least important, way to strengthen your faith.

When we connect with a faith-based community we are building relationships that help us through rough times, reducing stress, warding off depression, boosting our immune system, supporting heart health, and helping to keep our hormones in check. All while strengthening your faith!

Not sure where to find this faith-based community? Well, start at church. There are usually groups for men, women, young adults, and youth. You’re bound to find a group that would welcome you!

Not sure that’s for you? Feel free to start one! I started a Bible study group that’s been active for years. It’s not church-affiliated, it’s just a group of women who love to study Scripture.

I hope you use that strengthening your faith doesn’t have to take lots of time in this busy life. If we take time in the morning, build faith practices into our daily routine, practice gratitude, end our day with reflection, and find community we can easily strengthen our faith into one that others will see shining from us like a bright light!

With love,

🌸 Andrea
