Summer reality

I love summer time and a good summer date. I love having the kids home and making all their kid noises. My husband usually works fewer hours in the summer so we can do more things as a family. I’m blessed to have a job that goes with me, so I can work just about anywhere. And I love the opportunity summer gives us to get outside for dates.

Yet summers can also be exhausting. With kids home I’m needed lots more throughout the day. My work time is often interrupted. We also take a big trip north to see the grandmas and aunts/uncles, so that takes planning and time.

Between trying to do some fun family things, work, and travel, I find date nights are few and far between during the summer months. You’d think this would be a prime time for dates, but it just never seems to work out that way. Pair that with wanting to grow our faith as a couple and it seems nearly impossible.

If this describes your situation, too, then I’ve got you covered. Here are five easy dates ideas that will strengthen your marriage AND your faith. Regardless of your level of faith or type of worship, there’s something for everyone.

Summer dates

So here are five summer date ideas that can help strengthen both your marriage and faith:

Nature Walk/Picnic

Find somewhere beautiful near you and take a walk/hike or have a picnic. Bring along your favorite (heat safe) foods to enjoy. Get in touch with your inner kid and play catch or frisbee. Find a local lake or beach and enjoy the water. This is also a great lunch date time to catch up with what is going on with each other. After you eat and walk, find a quiet spot to spend time praying, thanking God for His creation and each other.

Volunteer

Spend a day helping your local community with volunteering. This summer date can be super flexible. There really is something for everyone with this idea. From beach cleanups to playing with puppies, you can totally find an activity that will help you make memories with your spouse, help your community, and grow your faith. Not sure what to do? This is a source to find volunteer needs. If you help through church, you’re obviously helping your faith community and I hope that helps your faith along. If you are not helping at church, take time to pray later that night for the people you helped and their needs. Usually volunteering also prompts us to be grateful for what we have, so don’t forget to return praise to God for all He has done in your life.

Movie night

Have a faith-based movie under the stars! Set up a projector against the house or a blanket, grab some chairs or a beach sheet, and enjoy a movie. Grab some popcorn and enjoy the warm summer evening together. Not sure what faith-based movies to watch? This link has a list of great movies. You can also check out PureFlix – they have great family-friendly, faith-based movies and series.

Bible & beach

Water makes a great summer date. Head over to the beach with your Bible and a devotional. Spend some time reading and discussing Scripture together, then relax and enjoy the sun and water. This combination of spiritual and physical relaxation can be refreshing for your marriage and for you individually. My husband and I love to do this just before sunset so we can watch a gorgeous sunset in the process.

Concert

Look for local Christian music festivals or worship concerts near you during the summer. Attending a live worship event can be a very powerful experience for your faith while you worship God together i an inspiring atmosphere. You’ll be building good memories while you build your faith.

Do something for a summer date!

Whatever you do, do something! Maybe you want to start a new hobby this summer. Do it! Want a “regular” date but don’t have money for a babysitter for a long time? Get one for an hour or two and go have a dessert date at a local restaurant. You save money on the sitter and the food. Love to read? Spend time reading a good Christian book at night together. Take time to talk about it. Here’s a list of more creative date ideas.

The two most important parts of strengthening your marriage and faith this summer are making good memories and focusing on faith. Whether you pray, study, or worship, take time to bring your moments to God and deepen your faith.

I hope this gives you a good starting place. Enjoy the summer!

With love,

🌸 Andrea
