Morning Prayer for Long Distance Relationships: Finding Strength and Connection in Faith
Last Updated on December 16, 2024 by Andrea
Long distance relationships are not for the faint of heart. As someone who experienced a long distance marriage for five years, I understand the emotional rollercoaster that comes with it—the joy of video calls, the longing during the long periods of time apart, and the challenge of maintaining a deep connection while physically apart.
Prayer, especially morning prayer, was a powerful tool in keeping our hearts connected and focused on God’s guidance every step of the way. This post offers reflections, prayers, and encouragement for those in a long distance relationship, focusing on the faith and the love of Christ.
The Truth About Long Distance Relationships
On average, couples live 125 miles apart. That qualifies as a long distance relationship! Any romantic relationship, dating or marriage, in which the parties do not live in the same town or close enough to see each other every day, qualifies as long distance.
If you’re reading this, you are likely in a long distance relationship. So you understand the challenges of this tough time. It certainly is one of the most challenging relationship forms. When you’re apart you are independent and taking care of everything for yourself. When you visit, you have to re-learn how to be part of a couple again. Sometimes the independence gets in the way of allowing your partner to help, as you would if you lived near each other.
Sometimes it’s also difficult to find things to talk about since the everyday life events aren’t always shared. It’s like being with a stranger for a while at the beginning of each visit. The flame of love dims a bit while we are apart and we need to fan it into a roaring fire through prayer and communication.
Some relationships start long distance – like those who meet online. Other relationships start out close but then one partner moves for some reason (usually work but could be anything). If you started together, you have a history of being together frequently so the distance can pose an added challenge. If you have a past relationship that was long distance, you may already have some skills for navigating it. But every relationship is unique and long distance is always challenging, even if you’ve done it before.
The Challenges and Blessings of Long Distance Relationships
A long distance relationship is often a journey through difficult times, where the next step is not always clear. While lots of people have been in a long distance relationship, there’s very little advice for how to navigate it. It’s easy to carry a heavy heart when the person you love most is far away. Being apart is often the hardest thing about the relationship.
The mornings can be especially tough, waking up without your best friend beside you. However, long distance relationships also offer a unique opportunity for spiritual growth and the chance to build a firm foundation in your relationship through prayer.
As the Holy Spirit works in us, we learn to love in new ways—ways that reflect God’s unconditional love. It’s through the tough times that we lean more on Jesus Christ, trusting Him to be the bridge that connects us.
Whether you’re in a long distance marriage or dating relationship, whether this is your soul mate or you’re not sure yet, know that you are not alone in this season of distance. God is with you, guiding you every step of the way.
Starting the Day with Prayer
While we are called to pray throughout the day, and night prayers can be important, morning prayer is a powerful way to center yourself and your relationship on God’s love and guidance. By beginning your day with a powerful good morning prayer, you can invite God to open hearts, calm anxieties, and give you the strength to endure the hardest things, even a long distance relationship. In the toughest moments, God’s blessing is on those who seek Him with a humble heart. Not comfortable making your own prayers? That’s okay. Start with reading your Bible every day and you’ll read some classic, amazing prayers. Biblical prayers are the most powerful prayers you can pray.
Scripture says not to lean on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). This means that you focus on what God wants for you and not what you see. We never see our situations the way God does. So we want to pray for His vision for our relationship. One of the most helpful starting points is simple prayer. To get you started, I’ve included two in this post.
A Sample Morning Prayer for Long Distance Relationships
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for this wonderful day, a new opportunity to experience your grace and love. Though we are separated by miles, I pray that You draw me and (partner’s name) closer through the power of Your love. He/She is the love of my life and a gift from you. Please guide our hearts today, keeping us strong, patient, and full of hope.
O Lord, I ask for divine guidance in our relationship. Help us to stay connected through video calls and messages, but most of all, through our shared faith in You. In times of difficulty, remind us of the true love we share, a love that is a reflection of Your love for us. May we always seek You first, trusting that You will lead us on the right path, even when we don’t understand.
Lord Jesus, give us the strength to endure long periods of time apart, and help us to appreciate the simple things—like a romantic good morning message or a quick call to check in. Help us to keep no record of wrongs. Remind us that these moments are blessings, and through them, You are working to strengthen our bond. Help us to have quality time together, even when we are apart. Guide us with Your word and help us to always find the right words to uplift and encourage each other.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Trusting God Through the Ups and Downs
Long distance relationships are full of ups and downs—there are good times, when everything feels wonderful and connected, and then there are hard times, when the distance feels unbearable. It’s in those moments of longing that we must lean on Christ Jesus and trust in His plan for us. I pray that God’s grace would be with you, guiding you in your current situation, and filling your heart with unending love.
It’s easy to become discouraged during the tough times but remember that the love you share is a reflection of God’s love. This season of distance is not the end of your relationship but an opportunity to strengthen your spiritual connection and grow in your understanding of each other’s love languages. In Christ, you will find the strength to overcome these challenges, and the Holy Spirit will guide you through every step.
Keeping the Connection Alive
One of the most beautiful parts of a long distance relationship is that it requires you to be intentional about staying connected. Whether through video calls, voice messages, social media, or sending a simple romantic good morning message, these acts of love help to nurture the bond between you and your partner. Remember your favorite things about your partner and let them know every day! If they are the right person for you, you’ll find ways to stay connected and endure this challenging time of being apart.
However, the best way to stay connected is through prayer. As you pray together or individually, you invite God to be a part of your relationship, allowing His wisdom and love to guide you. Prayer is not just a way to get through the tough times—it is a powerful way to celebrate the good things and cherish the love that you have for each other.
Another Simple Prayer for Strength
Dear Lord God,
Thank you for the gift of love. Though distance separates us, I know that nothing can separate us from Your love. You are a beacon of hope for us. I pray for Your divine guidance as we navigate this long distance relationship. Help us to communicate well, to be patient and understanding, and to always seek the best for each other. In every moment, remind us that You are with us, guiding us on the right path.
Dear God, I pray for good health, sound minds, and hearts that are full of hope and joy. When we feel the strain of the distance, let us remember that our love is a reflection of Your love. We trust that You are working in our relationship, preparing us for the next step and strengthening our bond through this season. Please guide us in your perfect will.
We give this relationship to You, Father God, trusting that You will bless us with the best things in Your perfect timing. In Christ Jesus’ name, Amen.
God’s Guidance and the Power of Love
During this time of separation, reflect on how God’s word provides wisdom and comfort. Through prayer, you gain clarity, strength, and the assurance that you are on the right path. In a long distance relationship, prayer becomes your firm foundation, a way to stay grounded in God’s truth and love. Record your prayers, and answers to prayer, in a journal so you can track His faithfulness over time.
Trust in the power of love—both the love between you and your partner, and the love that comes from God. His divine guidance will carry you through the hardest times and lead you to a deeper, more meaningful connection. Whether through short prayers or longer reflections, keep turning to God for strength, guidance, and peace.
Closing Thoughts
A long distance relationship is challenging, but with God at the center, it can be a season of growth, connection, and deeper love. Through morning prayers, you invite God to walk with you every step of the way, guiding your hearts, comforting your heavy heart, and giving you the strength to endure the distance. If your good morning love messages include prayer, all the better!
As you continue in your journey, remember that God is with you, guiding your relationship in the best way possible. Trust in His plan, and let His love be the flame that keeps your relationship strong. Whether it’s a quick video call, a good morning love message, or a heartfelt prayer, God is there, strengthening the bond between you and your loved one.
May God bless your relationship with unwavering love, good health, and the power of connection through faith.
With love,
🌸 Andrea
