Keeping Christ in Summer: Faith-Filled Family Fun

Last Updated on July 11, 2025 by Andrea

I love summer because I get more time with my kids. However, it’s certainly difficult to keep Christ front and center over summer. With an off-season busyness of camps, beach time, friends, wrestling practice, summer tournaments, and everything else, the normal school year routine gets thrown out the window. Here I have several ideas for faith-filled family fun this summer.

Practical Ways to Embrace Spiritual Growth During the Summer Months

Summer is a season brimming with sunshine, laughter, and endless possibilities. For Christian families, these longer days and school breaks are a great opportunity—a perfect time—to nurture faith formation amid the excitement of summer fun. Yet, with hectic schedules, vacations, and the lure of electronic devices and social media, it can be challenging to keep Christ at the center of our lives. How can we enjoy this good time and ensure that God’s abundant goodness remains at the heart of our family’s summer story?

Why Summer is a Spiritual Opportunity

During the summer months, life tends to slow down. The rush of the school year gives way to more free time and relaxed routines—a meaningful way to foster spiritual conversations and a deeper connection with family members. These are the days when a simple walk through a local park or a family dinner table discussion can become moments of faith-filled fun. With the whole family together, it’s a great time for daily reflection, sharing favorite Bible verses, and telling inspiring Bible stories that shape children’s lives and spark spiritual growth.

Christ-Centered Summer Ideas

These ideas should be a springboard for more ideas. Pick and choose what you like! Keep in mind that keeping Christ in our summer doesn’t mean every minute has to be about prayer and Bible study. Some intentional effort is all it takes to keep everyone’s focus where it needs to be – and have fun while we’re at it! No matter what you do, be sure to take pictures of your family having fun and making memories. You’ll want to look back on these days and remember the time you spent having fun together.

Weekly Family Devotionals Outdoors:

Take advantage of God’s creation! Gather in your backyard, at a picnic table, or beneath the shade of a tree at your local park. Leading a family prayer surrounded by nature is a fun way to experience God’s love firsthand. Even young kids and older children can participate by choosing a favorite Bible verse or sharing what they notice in the world around them, then thank God for those things. You can also use a devotional made for families to jumpstart discussion.

Nature Scavenger Hunts with Bible Verse Clues:

Create a fun plan by organizing an outdoor adventure where clues are Bible verses that lead to hidden treasures or objects in the garden. This is a great way for older kids and younger children alike to learn God’s word through play.

Faith-Based Movie Nights and Discussion:

Host a movie night featuring Christian films, followed by a group discussion. Serve ice cream and invite new friends or church members for a special event. This easy way to combine entertainment and faith-filled activities can create lasting memories and provide practical ways to discuss biblical values.

Board Games and Bible Stories:

Enjoy board games at the dinner table, followed by reading a Bible story or reflecting on how the game’s lessons relate to faith and character. Kids can act out the stories. Encourage them to be silly and really get into it! These fun activities offer quality time and spark meaningful conversations.

Vegetable Garden Projects:

Planting a vegetable garden together is a hands-on, meaningful way to teach young kids about God’s creation and stewardship. Use this as a chance for daily prayer and gratitude for the blessings of the summer season.

Serving Others During Summer

Summer break is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to serve the community and share the love of God. Consider these practical ways to make a difference:

  • Join local missions or volunteering efforts—help stock a food pantry, organize a clothing drive, or assist with church events. These are great ideas to teach children about compassion and the joy of serving others.
  • Encourage your family to reach out to neighbors in need. Deliver homemade treats or offer to help with yard work. Simple ways of showing kindness can powerfully impact children’s lives and foster new friendships.
  • Plan a camping trip with your church or community group. Use the outing as a time for shared reflection, outdoor activities, and group prayer beneath the stars, reminding everyone of God’s abundant goodness.

Avoiding Spiritual Drift in Busy Moments

Even with the best intentions, it’s easy for faith to take a backseat during summer vacation. Anchor your family’s spiritual life with these faith-filled practices:

  • Begin outings or summer activities with family prayer—whether you’re heading to the local park, starting a nature walk, or embarking on outdoor adventures. Scripture encourages us to pray without ceasing, so modeling this for our kids begins with simple prayers throughout the day. Summer can be a great time to deepen your prayer life.
  • Maintain Sunday worship, either with your home church or one in a new place while traveling. Attending church events is a great way to stay connected and inspired. If you can’t go to an in-person church, online options abound! If you’re traveling, here’s a resource for local churches around the country.
  • Set aside moments for daily prayer and memory verses, especially as a family. Use meal times or bedtime for gratitude and reflection on God’s word.
  • Encourage older children and young kids to keep a journal, capturing favorite Bible verses or lessons learned during the summer days. This is a fun way to chronicle spiritual growth and celebrate faith-filled summer experiences.

Conclusion

The summer season is a great time—a perfect opportunity—to deepen faith, strengthen family bonds, and experience God’s love in every moment. With a little intention and creativity, even the most ordinary summer activities can become faith-filled fun and meaningful ways to help children’s lives flourish. So whether you’re sharing ice cream after church, volunteering as a family, or simply enjoying a nature walk, remember: this is a season to celebrate God’s abundant goodness and keep Christ at the center of your summer fun.
