How to Pray for Your Kids as They Start a New School Year
I’ve always loved praying for my kids. I also love beginnings, and the start of the new school year is a wonderful beginning. It’s filled with promise and high hopes. While I pray for my kids every day before they get out of the car at school (or before they leave when they drive themselves), I take a few minutes to pray for their day – upcoming challenges, their heart and mind, and their overall protection. Before the school year starts also provide a great opportunity to pray for all school-related needs.

Introduction
As the first day of school approaches, parents everywhere find themselves caught between anxious thoughts and eager anticipation. The school building stands ready to welcome new friendships, exciting opportunities, and—let’s be honest—a few challenges as well. Whether your child is entering high school, starting kindergarten, or stepping into a brand-new thing this year, your heart is probably full of both hope and concern. It’s a wonderful way to remember that while we can’t accompany our children through every hallway or conversation, we can surround them with the powerful covering of prayer in the name of Jesus Christ.
Why Prayer Matters: Spiritual Covering in a Secular World
In today’s world, our children face peer pressure, new influences, and sometimes even harmful instruction. As Christian parents, we know the power of prayer is a simple prayer away. Through the Holy Spirit, we can ask God for spiritual protection, clarity of mind, and a clean heart for our children as they embark on another school season. Praying for your children isn’t just about their safety—it’s about inviting the peace of God, wisdom, and light to shine in their daily tasks, relationships, and the meditations of their hearts.
Themed Prayers for the School Year
These short prayers can guide your conversation with God for your child. Use the Scripture references to learn more about that verse. Keep these handy to pray throughout the day.
Protection (Psalm 91:11):
“Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for being the God of all protection. I pray that You would command Your angels concerning my child to guard them in all their ways. Let no harm come near their classrooms, playgrounds, or the bus ride home. In Jesus’ name, protect them as they walk the halls and face each school day.”
Wisdom (James 1:5):
“Dear Lord, Father of Wisdom, as my child learns and grows, grant them a sound mind and clarity of thought. Fill them with wisdom beyond their years, so they may make the right choices, walk the right path, and choose the right thing even under pressure.”
Friendships (Proverbs 13:20):
“Lord Jesus, thank you for the friends you have planned for my child. Surround my child with good friends who encourage them to do good works and be true to who you made them to be. Bless their friendships and protect them from negative influences. Guide them to build new friendships that honor You.”

Confidence (Philippians 4:13):
“Heavenly Father, when my child faces challenges, remind them they can do all things through Christ Jesus who gives them strength. Replace anxious thoughts with boldness and let them approach each day with confidence in Your promises. Thank you that our confidence comes from you and not our circumstances. I pray your confidence will help my child grow this year.”
Peace (Philippians 4:5-7):
“Father, let the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard my child’s heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Calm their nerves, soothe their fears, and fill their hearts with a spirit of gratitude and joy.”
Teachers & Staff (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13):
“Dear Lord, thank you for every person that helps at my child’s school. Bless each staff member, teacher, and school administrator. Give them wisdom, patience, and compassion as they lead and guide each student. Let the words of their mouths and the meditations of their hearts be pleasing to You.”
Spiritual Growth (Jeremiah 29:13):
“Lord, I know that your heart’s desire is for my child to long for a life with you by their side. May my child seek You with all their heart and find You in the midst of homework, classes, and extracurriculars. Draw them closer to You day by day.”
Hard Work & Perseverance (Colossians 3:23):
“God, thank you for every opportunity that comes my child’s way. Help my child approach every assignment, test, and responsibility with diligence and a right spirit. May they do all things as if working for the Lord, not for people, and take pride in good works.”
