Falling Away from God & Bible Verses to Find Your Way Back

There are seasons when God feels close—and seasons when He feels quiet, distant, or even completely absent. If you’re in a difficult time in your faith right now, I want you to know something first: you’re not broken, you’re not failing, and you’re definitely not alone.

I’ve walked through a season (several, actually) where my relationship with God felt like a broken relationship. I still believed. I still cared. But the closeness was gone. Prayer felt awkward. Reading God’s Word felt heavy. And underneath it all was this quiet question I didn’t know how to ask out loud: Can I really come back after drifting so far away?

Introduction

The Bible – these holy Scriptures – is surprisingly honest about seasons like this—and even more hopeful about restoration. The God of restoration is not intimidated by distance, disappointment, or doubt. He specializes in meeting people right where they are and gently leading them home.

If you’re wondering how to have a restored relationship with God, these Bible verses—and the truth behind them—are for you. No guilt. No pressure. Just an invitation back into a healthy relationship with your heavenly Father.

Acknowledge the Distance Without Shame

You don’t have to pretend everything is fine for restoration to begin. I’m serious. For a while everything won’t be fine. But acknowledging that you feel far away from God is truly the first step toward healing the fractured relationship.

Many people pull away from God quietly—through exhaustion, disappointment, unanswered prayers, confession of sin, grief, or simply life getting loud. Scripture never shames people for naming that distance.

The Psalms are full of people, including David, calling out to God when they feel distant from Him. There’s no shame in this part of the Christian life. I’ve found that being real before God is often the most amazing thing I can do when my faith feels fragile.

Bible verses to help with this step:

  • “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
  • “Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1)

Truth:
God already knows where the distance came from. Saying it out loud isn’t rebellion—it’s honesty. He wants you to come to Him. He invites us to stop leaning on our own understanding and come to Him just as we are. The Holy Spirit meets us in truth, not performance. What you are going through is no secret to God.

Remember That God Hasn’t Moved Away from You

I know it feels like God moved. But He didn’t. The truth is that we slowly drift when we follow our own way instead of God’s plan. Yet even when we drift, God remains steady.

One of the most healing truths in Scripture is that God’s posture toward us doesn’t change when we struggle. He doesn’t withdraw affection. He doesn’t cross His arms and wait for us to fix ourselves. That’s the grace of God at work.

This is great news! No matter how great our earthly father was, they still have limits. But our heavenly Father does not. His love is constant. He’s always loving and His great desire is for us to be with Him.

Bible verses to help with this step:

  • “Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. (Malachi 3:7)
  • “If we are faithless, he remains faithful.” (2 Timothy 2:13)

Truth:
The distance you feel isn’t proof of rejection—it’s often just a signal that your heart is tired. And if you’re like me, your heart is very tired. The distance just means that we’ve moved away from the presence of God. Life got busy, Bible study got hard, prayers went (seemingly) unanswered.

But God did not reject you. I promise. He loves you more than you can possibly imagine. He’s not angry – He misses you! His heart is for restoration, not punishment. He longs for you, just as He did Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Come Back with Honesty, Not Performance

God wants your real heart, not your polished one. He sees the real you…and He loves you just the way you are. He made you on purpose, for a purpose. So you don’t have to clean up your act before returning to Him.

Restoration doesn’t begin with effort; it begins with humility and a willingness to return in the spirit of gentleness.

Restoring your relationship with God doesn’t require perfect prayers, special routines, or emotional certainty. Scripture consistently shows God responding to humility and truth—not religious effort.

Bible verses to help with this step:

  • “A broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” (Psalm 51:17)
  • “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence.” (Hebrews 4:16)

Truth:
You don’t have to clean yourself up to come back. You come back to be healed, renewed, and made a new creation in Jesus’ name.

Take Small, Gentle Steps Back Toward Him

Restoration is a process, not a moment. You may stumble or backslide a bit. That’s okay. God’s mercies are new every morning. Spiritual growth takes time. Some days will feel strong; others will feel fragile. That’s part of the lifelong commitment we make in walking with God.

Sometimes we expect reconnection with God to feel dramatic. Often, it’s quiet and gradual—one honest prayer, one verse, one surrendered moment at a time.

Bible verses to help with this step:

  • “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)
  • “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

Truth:
Every small step toward God counts as movement toward home. I hope that brings you the same comfort that it brings me. His Word leads us back to paths of righteousness, producing much fruit over time.

Trust God’s Heart for Restoration, Not Punishment

God’s goal is always restoration, not rejection. He wants you to be near Him. He wants you with Him so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for you.

Throughout Scripture, God is portrayed as a Father who runs toward returning children—not one who lectures them at the door. God’s grace covers a multitude of sins and restores us into fellowship and peace.

We need only read Genesis to see how much He loves and forgives His people. That story of forgiveness continues through both the Old and New Testaments.

Bible verses to include:

  • “I will heal their backsliding; I will love them freely.” (Hosea 14:4)
  • “Come now, let us reason together… though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” (Isaiah 1:18)

Truth:
God isn’t keeping score. He’s extending grace, times of refreshing, renewed purpose, and eternal life though Christ Jesus. Are you ready to receive His grace and find hope in Him again?

Next Steps:

Once you’ve acknowledged your drift, been honest about what happened, and decided to pursue restoration, you’re well on your way.

But there are some practical next steps.

Find a local Bible study that fosters a bond of peace. Ask at your church. Ask friends if they go to one. Can’t find one? Start one! This restoration Bible study by Warren Wiersbe is a great one to start for reconciliation and restoration.

Spend daily time in God’s Word by reading your Bible every day. Even just a verse will do – ponder it and repeat it all day. Your thoughts will be on God and not the concerns and cares of this world.

Commit to memorizing Scripture. I was never very good at Scripture memorization until I found this book. The Heart of the Bible is a game changer!

Establish a prayer routine. This book by Priscilla Shirer is the single best book about prayer that I’ve ever read (and I’ve read a lot). She outlines how to set up a very practical prayer routine that will shake Heaven. The prayer of a righteous person has great power!

Conclusion

If you’ve felt far from God, let this be the truth you carry with you: distance does not disqualify you from relationship. The Bible is filled with people who wandered, questioned, failed, and doubted—and were still deeply loved by God.

Restoring your relationship with Him doesn’t start with doing more; it starts with coming back honestly. One prayer. One moment of openness. One quiet return.

And if all you can say today is, “God, I don’t even know how to do this anymore,” that’s enough. He hears that, and He honors that. He meets people exactly there. In fact, He met me there.

You’re not late. You’re not unwanted. I promise that you are not beyond restoration.

You’re simply being invited back.
