Hospitality
Hospitality is a core concept of the Christian faith. Israelites were encouraged to be hospitable to others. Even after Jesus came on the scene and changed up the entire faith system, hospitality continued to be important.
We see several Scriptures about hospitality:
- Hebrews 13:2 Do not neglect to show hospitality toward others, for some who have done this have entertained angels without knowing it! (NLT)
- Romans 12:13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. (ESV)
- 1 Peter 4:9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. (NIV)
BibleHub
My favorite resource for self-directed Bible study is BibleHub. This site has more resources than one could even imagine! There are over 25 translations for every verse, and that list grows over time. There are classic sermons, books, commentaries, dictionaries, maps, and more! I’ve been using BibleHub for several years and there’s always more to discover.
Why a self-guided study?
I love studying the Bible. I feel closer to God. Study reinforces what the Bible says, reminds me how to be obedient to God, and shows me the heart of God.
Two of my favorite Bible study authors are Priscilla Shirer and Cynthia Heald. Both of these women provide solid, Scripture-based study that allows us to learn while we explore the Bible.
While I love those particular Bible study authors, there’s nothing like letting Scripture guide us in our study of Scripture.
When we study for ourselves instead of relying on someone else to interpret for us, we learn more because we are more invested in what we are studying. We aren’t just absorbing what someone else says – we’re actually learning it for ourselves.
Contrary to popular belief, we do NOT need a degree in theology to understand the Bible. Admittedly, it’s sometimes difficult to interpret what some verses mean. And not all of us have the historical and cultural background to understand what the Bible means in context. This is where BibleHub comes in.
When should you study the Bible?
Lots of people ask when they are supposed to study the Bible. That’s a legitimate question. The answer is, study the Bible when it’s best for you. I find early morning works best for me – it sets my day off on the right tone and gives me a good focus for the day. Otehrs use nap time when they ahve young kids, as that’s a quiter time. Still ohters like to end their day with study.
It’s the DOING that’s important, not the time, though.
Tools needed:
- Compter, tablet, or phone (preferred in that order)
- Journal
- Pen/pencil
- Physical Bible (optional)
I recorded this tutorial to walk you through one way of using BIbleHub to study about hospitality. You can stop, rewind, and slow down the video as needed. Use this as a guide to not only learn about hospitality but how to use BibleHub for your own study on any topic.
