10 Bible Verses to Pray Over Your Child Today

I love praying Bible verses over my children. I somehow feel like I’m connecting more with God when I integrate Scripture into my prayers. And that’s even more important to me when I’m praying for my kids. What do I pray about for my kids? Everything! I pray for their salvation, of course, but also for their daily lives and challenges, their friendships, their future spouse, their peace, their faith life – the list goes on! Anything that I’m tempted to worry about gets turned into a prayer for them. And when possible, I include Bible verses to pray over them.

Introduction

As a Christian parent, one of the most powerful gifts we can give our children is prayer. While we may not be able to control every circumstance they will face, we can cover them daily in God’s Word. Many of us pray for our kids before the start of the school year, but not always every day. I’ve found that the more we pray, the more a prayer life becomes habit.

Praying Scripture over our children not only invites God’s presence into their lives but also reminds us of His promises for them—promises of wisdom, protection, knowing the will of God, spiritual growth, and eternal life.

When we ask the Lord to make His face shine upon our children, to guide them toward wise choices, to fill them with a spirit of wisdom and the knowledge of the Lord, we are planting seeds of faith that last forever. The Bible is full of verses we can personalize into prayers that speak blessings, encouragement, and God’s good plans over our kids.

Below are key Scriptures you can begin praying over your child today. Be sure to personalize them with your child’s name and circumstances.  While they are simple prayers, they are rooted in the promises of God for a solid foundation. Please follow the links to find the entire verse, along with context so you can more fully understand what the verses are about.

1. God’s Blessing and Presence

  • Verse: Numbers 6:24–26 – “The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.”
  • Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for my child. Thank you for the special way that You made them. Make Your face to shine upon them and be gracious to them. Protect them every day in all their activities. Help them to see Your presence in their lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

2. Making Wise Choices

  • Verse: Proverbs 2:6–8 – “For the Lord gives wisdom…He guards the course of the just.”
  • Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for knowing the plans you have for us; plans for a hope and a future, and not to harm us. I pray that today through the power of the Holy Spirit You will guide my child’s thoughts and actions. Please help them to make wise choices in every situation and then help them to walk in Your path to follow up on those choices. When necessary, please correct my child to keep them on the path You have planned for them. I thank You for all the blessings of this life that You have given me and my child. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

3. Shining Their Light

  • Verse: Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light shine before others…”
  • Prayer: Dear Lord, help my child to have courage today to live boldly for you, and to reflect your love to everybody they meet, even the people that are difficult to love. Help them to share the love of Christ freely. We know that you created all of us in your image and that when we accept Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit shines a light in our lives. I pray that my child would share this light of goodness, kindness, and gentleness with the world around them. I pray that their light would be recognizable in this dark world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

4. Spirit of Wisdom

  • Verse: Ephesians 1:17 – “…that He may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation.”
  • Prayer: Lord God, please fill my child with divine insight in clarity for all their decisions. Give them discernment that can only come from You and wisdom beyond their years. Today’s world is a difficult place for children, and we know that You will never steer us wrong. I commit my child’s life and decisions to You, trusting that You will grant them a spirit of wisdom that surpasses human understanding. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

5. Knowledge of our Lord

  • Verse: Proverbs 9:10 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Lord is understanding.”
  • Prayer: Heavenly Father, please cover my child today with Your love and faithfulness. I pray that they would grow in their knowledge of You, and in the reality of all that salvation means for them.  Help them to lean on you instead of their own understanding. I pray that they would grow in wisdom and stature as they trust in you. I pray that you will lead them to read your Holy Word and memorize Scripture so that it comes to mind when they need it. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

6. Fruit of the Spirit

  • Verse: Galatians 5:22–23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…”
  • Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that You would help my child to develop a Christlike character. Fill them with the fruit of the spirit: love joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Please do more than fill my child with this fruit but give them the discernment to know which situations call for which fruit. Guide my child’s thoughts and actions to reflect the fruit You have placed in them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  • Verse: 1 Corinthians 12:7 – “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”
  • Prayer: Heavenly Father I know that You have made my child unique, and with a special purpose in this life. I pray that, as they grow, they would begin to discover their spiritual gifts and use them for Your glory. Help my child to embrace their uniqueness and discover the ways that that uniqueness can be used to serve Your kingdom. Give me wisdom and discernment to be able to help my child develop these gifts in a way that glorify You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

8. Long Life

  • Verse: Exodus 20:12 – “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live a long life…”
  • Prayer: Almighty God, Your Word says that You have numbered our days and You know how many hairs are on our head. If it is Your will, I pray that my child would have a long life filled with health, strength, and obedience. I pray that my child would make healthy choices to support a long life with what they put in their body and in healthy movement. I pray that diseases an illness would be kept from my child. Even when they go through difficult times, be the God of hope for them. Most importantly, give them a life of love that they can share with others. Please bless them with a long life to serve You and bring glory to You. In the name of the Lord, Amen.

9. Eternal Life

  • Verse: John 17:3 – “Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God…”
  • Prayer: Dear Lord, perhaps the most important prayer I can ever pray for my child is that they would know You as their personal Savior and receive the gift of eternal life. Only You truly know what is on my child’s heart. I pray that You would draw them closer to You that You would stick closer than a brother, as your Word promises. As my child embraces the gift of salvation, guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus, that they would learn to give all their concerns and worries to You, trusting in the eternal life and salvation that You have promised in Jesus Christ. Amen.

10. Good Plans

  • Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”
  • Prayer: Dear Lord, Your word says that You have a hope and a future plan for us. I pray that You would make Your good plans evident in my child’s life. I pray that You would give them wisdom and discernment to be able to recognize those plans and act on them, even when it seems counterintuitive to what their human mind would think. I pray that my child would recognize the good plans that You have for them and embrace them. Help my child to develop their spiritual gifts to support the good plan that You have for them. Help me as a mom to shepherd and encourage my child in the path You have planned for them. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

A Prayer for You

Before concluding, I want to take a moment to pray for you, sweet parent. Parenting is a difficult job, and we truly cannot do it without the blessing and peace that comes from Christ Jesus.

Dear Lord, I pray for the sweet parent reading this message today. I pray that they would know how much You love them. I pray that they would understand that You love their children even more than they do. That you created this child for Your glory with specific gifts and talents, and a unique plan in mind for every single child. Give this parent wisdom and discernment to know how to lead the child on Your path.

I pray that this parent would come to You with all the worries and concerns that come with parenthood and that they would trust You. Help them to give all their concerns to You and trust in Your goodness. May Your peace of God that passes all understanding guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as they raise these children. Comfort them, protect them, be the rock on which they stand as they leave their child in a godly life. Thank You for all the blessings of this life and the enormous blessing of being a parent. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Conclusion

Praying the Word of God over our children is one of the most powerful ways we can guide them, even when they are outside of our care. Whether we pray for their wise choices, their light to shine, or their growth in the fruit of the Spirit, we can trust that God’s promises are true and that He is faithful to work in their lives.

Every prayer you pray is planting seeds of faith, hope, and blessing. So keep praying Scripture daily. Rest in the truth that your child is in the hands of a loving God. And He has good plans, a gift of eternal life, and a future filled with His light.

If you don’t have a regular prayer routine, it’s never too late to start.

With love,

🌸 Andrea
